Unlocking Your Heart and Defeating Sin

Unlocking Your Heart and Defeating Sin

There is no one on this Earth who doesn’t have to battle with sin. The Bible says, "There is none righteous, no, not one." So, what can we do to defeat things like lust and fleshly desires?

Let’s take a look at the well-known verses in Matthew 5:29-30:
"And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into heck. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into heck."

While Jesus is speaking in hyperbole, many interpret this passage to mean that sin is so serious it would be better to cut off the offending member than to continue in sin. While this is true, let’s dig a little deeper into these verses and consider them literally.

Let’s say a person sins with his eyes by lusting after someone, so he decides to pluck one out. He no longer has his lustful eye, but he soon realizes he can still sin with his hand, so he decides to cut that off. This man will eventually come to see that no matter what he removes, he can still find a way to sin.

Now, let’s look at the verse right before this. Matthew 5:28 says,
"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

The real problem is in the heart. When it comes to sinful actions, we have to look at the root issue—the heart. Your actions start in the heart. Where is your heart? If your heart is right with God, you’ll find yourself far from sin.

God says in Jeremiah 24:7,
"And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart."

God gives people a heart that truly knows and follows Him. When you give your heart to the Lord, He leads you to repentance, which means turning away from sin. He will deliver you from all your sins if you trust in Him.

So remember, if you struggle with sin, it’s not about behavior modification—it’s about getting your heart right and giving it all to Jesus. If you are a believer struggling with sin, pray as David prayed in Psalm 51:10:
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

You will get on the right track if you dwell on your salvation—the truth that Jesus died to take away your sins and save you from heck. What better way to show your love for Him than by allowing Him to transform your heart?

Hope this helps. God bless!
