How to know if Your Thoughts are From God

How to know if Your Thoughts are From God

A lot of people wrestle with their thoughts every single day. We’re often told to trust our thoughts, but here’s the plain truth—you can’t always trust them.

Think about this: sin comes in two ways. First, through our nature, which we inherited from Adam and Eve. We were born with it, and we can’t get rid of it. Second, sin comes through action, the things we do that displease God.

Now, God gave us free will—the ability to choose right or wrong. But does sin start with an action? No. It starts with a thought. And since we’re born with a sin nature, we’re naturally going to have sinful thoughts.

Paul describes this struggle in Romans 7:15:
"For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I."

He’s saying, “I know what’s right, but I keep doing what’s wrong.” Sound familiar? That’s the battle we all face.

So how do we discern our thoughts? How do we know if they’re from God? The Bible actually tells us.

Hebrews 4:12 says:
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Did you catch that? The Word of God discerns our thoughts.

If you want to know whether your thoughts are from God, immerse yourself in the Bible. God speaks through His Word, and it penetrates deep into your heart and mind.

If you feed your flesh, you open the door for the enemy to influence your thoughts. But if you fill your mind with God’s Word, you’ll be able to discern truth from lies.

Just look at Jesus when He was tempted by Satan. How did He respond? He used Scripture—“It is written…” Even when Satan tried to twist God’s Word, Jesus discerned the deception through Scripture.

So, be in the Word. Study it. Memorize it. When a thought comes, ask yourself:

  • Is this biblical?

  • What does the Bible say about this?

That’s how you discern your thoughts and know for sure if they’re from God.
